What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, affects the soft and hard tissues around your teeth. This includes the gum and bone support that hold your teeth firm. It is caused by excessive bacteria accumulation resulting in inflammation in surrounding areas that destroy attachment and support. This process is then modified or accelerated by smoking or uncontrolled diabetes that change the pattern of tissue destruction and bacteria growth. Underlying all this may be a predisposition to destruction of tissues due to a different body response to fighting bacteria.? Periodontal disease is a complex disease that is multi factorial and requires a management strategy to address all the different components.
